Woodworking Joinery - Rabbet, Groove, and Dado Joints These joints are basically a way to add just a little strength to a simple glue joint, and not a lot of complexity. The additional strength comes from the different wood grains getting incorporated into the joint, or in the case of solid wood, it increases the surface area for glue.

THE DOVETAIL JOINT. Dovetail joints are found where the ends of two pieces of wood meet at a right angle, such as along the corners of drawer sides. The wedge-shaped assembly, which requires only glue and no other fasteners, is often a sign of quality workmanship.
